Frida Kahlo painted this after reading of a drunken man who had stabbed his girlfriend 22 times to death. He told the judge: “But I only gave her a few small nips.” This is among her goriest work. At the time this painting was produced\, Frida had uncovered her husband\, Diego Rivera\, was having an affair with her sister. Blood-red paint drips out of the picture\, on to the frame. Yet the painting is small in size with delicate details. Kahlo juxtaposed pretty details – doves\, a lace pillow – with shocking violence. This mix of the macabre and ironic\, intimate and gory\, showcases intimate partner violence in every way. \nSpecial performance by Las Cartas de Frida honoring domestic violence survivors. Las Cartas de Frida has been empowering women in the Chicago area through writing\, music\, art\, and dance.
