How do you kick up the energy level, collaboration, and results at your organization? And, how do you sustain that over time?
Classic “change management” theory tells us the first step is creating a sense of urgency. Yet, how we do that dramatically impacts what happens around us. And that is where many people can fail.
If you are beginning a new role, or need people around you to become far more enthusiastic and intentional in generating a new way of operating – and a higher magnitude of results – you need thinking partners. You need respect and community. The better question is: how do you engage people’s spirits and ambition to co-create with you, sharing responsibility for outcomes? How do you tap into the powerful energy available when there’s a shared sense of meaning among a group of people?
Dire warnings, such as, “get on the bus or you are out!” may work in the short term, but you will not realize what’s possible when you have fully engaged peoples’ hearts and minds and their innate creativity and wisdom.
Engaging people in recognizing their roles in something that matters involves creating powerful meaning, and relationships based on trust. In a time of accelerated change, the ability to consciously engage others in shared meaning has become a critical leadership skill. Yet, in a world that values action and activity, we may not take the time to engage people in creating shared meaning. A more powerful, self-generating, sustainable sense of urgency will arise from a shared experience of meaning.
Creating a sense of urgency is really a conversation. It’s part of a larger conversation about what we are doing together, why it matters and why we need to shift how we are being. To shift the way others are being, you will need to shift. Creating the powerful conversations that produce unforeseeable, sustainable outcomes among a group of people involves understanding your audience and what matters to them.
We love supporting leaders in deepening their ability to do this. It’s fun and rewarding for everyone. One way we support leaders with this is in working with them to create a Transformational Leadership Retreat. We’d love you to join us at our next seminar, in which we share the 6-question coaching model we use for leaders and their teams.
Creating powerful meaning is one of the topics we discuss in Leading the Transformational Retreat June 8 from 12 pm – 4:30 pm at Catalyst Ranch.
