Artful Work

Area of Expertise:  I help creative entrepreneurs, artists, designers of all kinds and craftspeople grow their businesses and make more money doing what they love.

What is your business & what makes it unique?

I have been helping artists, designers, craftspeople and all kinds of creative entrepreneurs for over 20 years. And I love it. I have developed a unique coaching process that will focus on clarifying your personal vision of success, expanding your understanding of what is possible, creating a clear and concise plan to reach your goals, and teaching you skills and processes for achieving financial freedom.

What sparked the idea for your business?

All my life I have managed my own or other creative businesses and taught on the side.  I started out having a business making hand painted silk clothing with a very talented fashion designer and then managed The Maya Romanoff Company, an internationally recognized fabric and wallpaper company.  Then for 15 years after moving to Michigan I had a decorative painting company. Throughout all these years I have been fascinated by business and how people succeed. I was teaching the Business of Art as a workshop a few times a year and loved it but did not really get how important it was. Although I liked painting and was very good at it I felt that I wasn’t contributing in the way I wanted to.  Then two years ago I was in a workshop and realized that being creative and being a great businesswoman was a unique combination and that others did not have that combination of skills.  It became clear that I could use my artistic abilities to teach creative people business skills in a way that they would understand and embrace. Nothing has been more satisfying for me than helping others prosper doing the things they love.

What fuels your creativity? How do you keep the ideas coming?

I get ideas from looking at things.  Magazines, Artwork, Nature.  So I spend time each week just looking at things.  I also believe strongly in taking time to day dream.  Whenever I give myself the time I always come up with more creative ideas than I can actually act on.

Give us an example of a creative output that you’re particularly proud of.

This is a difficult question for me since my businesses have been creating things every day. I am one of those people that think you just need to keep working and that in the process of continuous growth the best ideas emerge. I feel that the more practice you get with creativity the more vocabulary you learn to add to future projects so creativity is growing and getting better each day.

What was one of the best meetings you’ve ever attended? What made it so great?

The best meeting I ever attended was one I facilitated. It was for the staff of an art center.  I lead the staff through exercise and art projects to help them figure out what their vision of personal success was and then asked them to identify ways they could realize their personal goals at the art center. So many amazing ideas came up that enlarged and improved the programs the center was offering and the staff was so excited that they became very enrolling, willing to put in extra time and energy because they so strongly wanted to be able to contribute in their won way.

What recently sparked your curiosity and how did you satisfy it?

I have been absolutely fascinated by how people succeed. I have read countless books on the subject but my best way of learning new things is to take workshops. The energy and support I get from the other participants adds so much to my understanding of the material. That is one of the reasons I offer workshops in addition to working privately with clients.
