Chicago is a wonderful city with a flourishing arts scene. With so many aspiring filmmakers to pass through our ranks and having collaborated with established filmmakers on other projects, we were inspired this past spring to help celebrate them. Local Feature came from that inspiration. We’re very excited to launch this new film series that celebrates Chicago-based filmmakers and foster a place for the conversation their film sparks to take place. We were very fortunate to have the powerful documentary The Interrupters as our debut film.

The Interrupters follows three  “Violence Interrupters” who work for Ceasefire, a local organization whose guiding principle is that the spread of violence mimics the spread of infectious diseases, and so respond with similar treatment:  go after the most infected, and stop the infection at its source. When asked about his experience making the film, Director Steve James said:

“Making THE INTERRUPTERS was a gift.  I became a documentary filmmaker because I wanted to understand people and communities other than the ones I’ve lived in.  The best film experiences are akin to living inside a rich and surprising novel.  Your own personal life and day-to-day worries tend to recede and pale in comparison as you bear witness to the lives and often profound struggles of others. With Ameena, Cobe, and Eddie –  we met people in this film that have done terrible things in their lives, but who now have found their way back to their true selves.”

Although Steve will be unable to join us that evening, Ricardo Cobe Williams (one of the violence interrupters featured in the film) will be in attendance for the screenings post-show discussion. Please join us on August 24th at 6PM for what will sure to be a thought-provoking event. For more info on Local Feature or to RSVP, please click here.
