I know what you are thinking, How can a plastic cup or straw simulate nature? I bet at first glance these pictures looked a lot like snow mounds to you, but in reality they are made from plastic cups and straws. Crazy! Tara Donovan is yet another artist who challenges us to think outside the box and ask questions.

Artist Tara Donovan transforms everyday, disposable materials into formally elegant sculptures, installations, and works on paper. Her installations bring wonder to the most common objects of everyday life. After choosing a single object, such as a transparent drinking straw, scotch tape, a Styrofoam cup, or a paper clip, Donovan experiments with assembling multiples of the chosen object in different ways. Sensitive to the specific needs of her materials and the nature of her exhibit spaces, her installations are often arranged in ways reminiscent of geological or biological forms.

In Tara’s words, “it is not like I’m trying to simulate nature. It’s more of a mimicking of the way of nature, the way things actually grow.”
