Title of Book: I Wish I Worked There! A Look Inside the Most Creative Spaces in Business

What are some of the main themes of your book?

  • A behind the scenes look at how some of the world’s most famous brands nurture and support a creative culture.
  • Surprising finds and inspiring insights around how these companies make their spaces work.
  • Four different types of creative space that support creative activities: Spaces that stimulate, Space for reflection, Space for collaboration and Space to play.
  • It doesn’t have to cost a fortune and in fact many companies have added their own unique touches and involved their employees in creating cost-effective and inspiring ways.

What prompted you to write the book?

As a Design & Innovation consultant, it has long intrigued me why many businesses would spend big money on trying to attract great talent and yet put them in dull and lifeless cube farms!  I also had heard about some great stories about companies who had great working environments and placed an emphasis on cultivating innovative cultures.

‘I Wish I Worked There! A Look Inside the Most Creative Spaces in Business’ is an independent book that evidences the significant role that a physical environment which supports creative behavior can play in employee performance and ultimately the success of a business.  Following 18 months of research, including a personally funded global journey to over forty sites and interviews with over 350 key executives at twenty of the world’s most famous brands such as Nike, Google, Bloomberg and the LEGO Group, I created a coffee table business book, packed with a thousand insights, and a whole lot of inspiration. Through the privileged access gained, I was able to share the often low-cost but always well considered design solutions that house some of today’s most innovative business teams, and presents a simple formula for anyone wishing to emulate these big businesses.

What sparks your creativity?

Being with inspiring people in inspiring spaces.

What’s one big thing you want people to take away from your book?

Creative spaces are not just for ‘creatives’ and they’re not about beanbags and lava lamps!  They are space that help people to think and should be designed and executed in thoughtful and appropriate ways.
