Keep changing things up!
This can be your discussion points or exercises, it can also be group size or who works with who.
Using as much of the meeting space as possible is also important. No-one wants to be in the same place for too long!
Getting outside for breaks or even sections of the meeting will always energize people.
I also like creating opportunities for people to mix up how they capture any outputs – be it on small bits of paper, flipchart or huge rolls of wallpaper.
Finally, at certain times in the day, a well-placed energizer can do wonders for people!
What sparks your creativity?
Other people, sleep and exercise!
I love sharing half-baked ideas with people to see what reactions and builds they have.
I often have my best ideas just after I have woken up – especially if I have gone to sleep mulling something over.
And if I am struggling with something and can go for a walk, or even better a run, I’ll always come back feeling more creative than before!

My 6 month old son Luka and I just created hand and foot prints for his mom for Mother’s Day. They look great, as did his blue-tinted right foot and red-tinted left feet afterwards – took a while to wash that off!
What was one of the best meetings you’ve ever attended? What made it so great?
At the end of last year we co-ran a meeting with a client we had been training and coaching. We wanted to hear how people had been doing and were keen to make it super comfy for them to talk about their own achievements!
So we got them to interview one another and then share stories based on the theme: ‘The Medals I Should Have Won.’ This made it okay for people to be a bit playful and provocative about how they had stretched and grown and this filled the room with great stories and a fabulous atmosphere.

Roller Derby! I had heard through a friend that it was a big deal and growing so I investigated and found that we have a regular Roller Derby night here in Atlanta. Went along with some friends and totally enjoyed soaking in a colorful night of retro outfits, hilarious puntastic names, team mascots…and really got sporting action too. Who knew?!

New York. My adopted home town is a place that never ceases to amaze me – just walking to work each day can be an adventure. Every night there is something new or different to do from lectures at the Explorer’s Club to Mexican Wrestling at Webster Hall. You can’t help but be inspired in this city. I’m constantly filling my head with things that might prove useful one day when I need to have some fresh ideas.

Personally – I’m pretty proud of the twisted children’s poems I’ve been writing recently. They are a little off the wall and my Mum thinks I should never read them to any actually kids! To help carve out time for this hobby I get up early and spend 2 hours writing each morning as the sun rises. I’ve now started performing my poems at an open mic night, which has been great fun and I haven’t experienced any boos …. yet.
Professionally – One of my favorite clients to work for is Lego. A little while back I got to spend 3 months working for them to develop new toys for boys aged 5 to 9! It was a dream brief. We got to spend loads of time hanging out with kids in their homes and in their school which was great fun (even when they were engaged in farting competitions). And although I can’t reveal what the ideas we developed were – I can say that they were some of my favorite ideas of all time. Watch your toy store shelves and soon you’ll see them.
What was one of the best meetings you’ve ever attended? What made it so great?
We ran a large innovation conference for a pharmaceutical company last Autumn. We organized everything from start to finish; including 400 handmade invites and we created an online site to support the delegates after the event. It was one of the greatest things I’ve been involved in. We organized an action packed 2 days that were not only a lot of fun but also created ideas of real value for the business. We had 100 people flown in from all over the world so the room was filled with fresh perspectives and inspiration. We had loads of special guests join us at key points – everyone from a transgender cabaret performer to the Vice President of Brand at Virgin. It felt more like an Innovation rock show than a standard business conference. It was truly exhausting to host but the feedback we received made it all worthwhile.
What recently sparked your curiosity and how did you satisfy it?
At the start of the year I was consumed with a burning desire to find out more about my creative heroes (Jim Henson, Tim Burton, Edward Gorey, Dr Seuss, Alfred Hitchcock, Walt Disney, Stan Lee). I read everything I could find online and then ordered loads of used books off Amazon. I even found myself going on a pilgrimage to the Muppet Mansion (Jim Henson’s old home that’s now a bit of a building site) in the Upper East Side and just standing outside it trying to absorb some of his creative genius. It’s been a really useful experience both professionally and personally. I feel inspired as an individual and now I have a whole host of fresh stories to inject into our training courses.
