Name:  Cheryl McPhilimy

Company:  McPhilimy Associates, Inc.

Area of Expertise: Drawing out and capturing the essence of an individual or organization and developing key messaging that sticks.  My firm’s tagline is “where strategy finds expression.” I help clients identify what is important and then express it.

Share one of your trade secrets for keeping the energy and enthusiasm flowing when working through a long session or meeting with your clients:  Stretch breaks.  We are physical as well as mental beings.  I’ve got a roster of quick stretches (the cow, the wolf, the raisin) that get the blood circulating, rattle out the kinks and keep people fresh.

What sparks your creativity?  Tools and new materials.  I love the blank canvas, markers, paper, pencils, index cards.

Give us an example of a creative output that youre particularly proud of.  I created a tool for helping businesspeople identify their areas of expertise and share them with journalists who might be interested.  Every time I speak on this particular topic, I encourage the crowd to try the tool and let me know what results.  Every single time (I’ve got a perfect record going), at least one member of the audience secures free media coverage as a result.  It thrills me to hear back from them about their successes.

What was one of the best meetings youve ever attended? What made it so great? Fourth-grade Girl Scout troop 222 in the school basement.  It had a defined opening and a closing.  We stuck to the established timeline.  We got something done — a craft.  We pledged our shared commitment.  We appreciated and recognized each other with an inclusive circle.  Most of all, it was fun.  Pretty near perfect.

What recently sparked your curiosity and how did you satisfy it?  After seeing a play, The Long Red Road at the Goodman Theatre, I was highly curious as to what could possibly have been going through the mind of the playwright when he wrote it.  When the houselights came up, a few friends and I decided to stay for the post-show discussion.  Fascinating!  The playwright and a number of the actors joined the conversation as did director Phillip Seymour Hoffman.  We learned far more than we anticipated.

Join us for Cheryl McPhilimy and Jackie Sloane’s Breakthrough Lab April 29th.  Gather with a diverse group of creative thinkers and experience an infusion of energy that will help in beating the obstacle that is keeping you, your project or your company from being front and center in your audience’s minds.  Visit our happenings page for all the info!
